Exxon Mobil Arkansas Oil Spill

Exxon’s Pegasus pipeline, which can carry more than 90,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude from Patoka, Illinois to Nederland, Texas, was shut after the leak was discovered late Friday afternoon in a subdivision near the town of Mayflower. The leak forced the evacuation of 22 homes. Exxon also had no specific estimate of how much crude oil had spilled, but the company said 12,000 barrels of oil and water had been recovered – up from 4,500 barrels on Saturday. The company did not say how much of the…

What Wastes Energy and Stands Out From Space?

When looking at images of the Earth at night captured by NASA, you expect to see more light in densely populated areas and less light in more rural areas. That’s normal. However, NPR points out, you can also find a big cluster of lights in an area of what should be mostly empty Western plains. The light blob on the top left of the image above is located in North-Dakota, near the Canadian border, and it is caused by the oil & gas industry there. It is a relatively…

Norway Reduces 2/3 of Palm Oil Consumption

The palm oil industry is the main cause of rainforest destruction in Indonesia and Malaysia. 88 percent of the world’s palm oil is produced in these two countries, including palm oil for the Norwegian market. Palm oil is an edible plant oil  and is derived from the mesocarp of the fruit of the oil palm. Naturally reddish in color because of a high beta-carotene  content, palm oil, along with coconut oil, is one of the few highly saturated vegetable fats. It is semi-solid at room temperatures.  Norwegian food producers used 15,000 tons of palm oil in 2011. A successful campaign mobilizing public…

Ball State has US Largest Geothermal (Heating- Cooling) System

Ball State University known for its campus-wide ground-source geothermal system, is the nation’s largest geothermal heating and cooling system. The geothermal project will extract heat from the ground during the winter and put heat into the ground during the summer to help heat and cool 47 buildings on campus when fully operational. The university anticipates to save $2 million annually in operating costs and cut its carbon footprint by nearly 50%. Ball State’s new geothermal system that reduces energy costs, diversifies the university’s energy portfolio, and supports good, local jobs. Launched…

Lucy Lawless Arrested for Oil Drilling Protest

Police arrested actress Lucy Lawless the former “Xena Warrior Princess” and 5 environmental activists after the group spent four days protesting aboard an oil-drilling ship docked in New Zealand in an attempt to raise awareness about oil drilling in the Arctic and prevent the ship from leaving.. 60 Million Barrels of Waste Water Daily

The biggest output of the U.S. oil and gas industry is not oil or gas but dirty water. Every day, U.S. oil and gas producers bring to the surface 60 million barrels of waste water, with a salt content up to 20 times higher than sea water and laced with hazardous chemicals. For the most part, they dispose of it safely, as required by federal and state laws. The average oil well produces 7.6 barrels of water for every barrel of crude. The water/oil ratio can rise to as…

Oil Drilling (Canada)

For many, images of Canada’s boreal forest have come to symbolize the environmental evils of petroleum in the 21st century. The so-called surface mines, sticky mixture of hydrocarbons called bitumen, now account for a substantial portion of Canada’s oil exports, including much of the petroleum going to the United States. But the face of the industry exploiting northern Canada’s oil sands is not environmentally friendly. The forest-ringed facilities have traded shovels and enormous trucks for an extraction process that drills down hundreds of meters into solid ribbons of bitumen…

Natural Gas

An environmentally friendly and efficient energy source, natural gas is the cleanest-burning conventional fuel, producing lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions than heavier hydrocarbon fuels such as coal and oil. Historically, natural gas also has been one of the most economical energy sources. Natural gas fuels electric power generators, heats buildings and is used as a raw material in many consumer products, such as those made of traditional plastics. Natural gas is more plentiful and more cost-effective for most people than renewable sources of energy, such as wind, solar…
