Turning Plastic Bags Into Plastex

Reform Studio was founded to create high design objects out of low grade plastic bags. The founder, Mariam Hazem, said “Recycling consumes energy and resources but this can be avoided by directly upcycling the bags in new products we design.” Using a traditional Egyptian craft that weaves thread together, she applied the same methodology using plastic. The collected plastic bags are sterilized, cut into strips and then woven on a manual handloom. It took persistent to revive this old craft into upcycling plastic bags. Now, one square metre of Plastic is woven in 30 minutes!
