Minimum Wage Increase In Bangladesh

After many protests, the Bangladesh factory workers were successful at increasing their minimum wage. The September protests caused 400 of the 5,000 factories to close. The government responded with a minimum wage increase in daily salaries from 3,000 taka ($39) to 5,300 taka ($68), effective December 1. The increase in minimum wage is expected to increase retail costs by 5-15%.

Bangladesh has the second largest garment industry and lowest wages in Asia after Myanmar. The garment industry accounts for over 2/3 of Bangladesh’s exports — a $20 billion industry for the nation.
