Elon Musk Hyperloop Solar Powered Train

Elon Musk, the co-founder of PayPal and chief executive of Tesla Motors (TSLA) , the highest-performing, highest-rated all-electric car in North America, has just released his plans for the solar powered Hyperloop train. He released the 57 page PDF file of the Hyperloop without patents, under an open source license. Solar arrays will cover the top of tubes in order to provide power. The train will link LA to San Francisco in 30 minutes with speeds up to 700 mph, shortening the commute by car which takes 6 hours without traffic. The Hyperloop was designed to link cities less than 1,000 miles apart that have high amounts of traffic between them. Under 1,000 miles, the Hyperloop could have a nice edge over planes, which need a lot of time to take off and land.

Musk has built his entrepreneurial career standing up for his visions. California is planning a high rail train system with a budget of $70 billion. However, Musk  thinks “You have to look at what they say it will cost vs. the actual final costs, and I think it’s safe to say you’re talking about a $100 billion-plus train,”  adding that the train is too slow and a horrendous land rights mess. To solve this problem, he is proposing the Hyperloop train which would be built elevated off the ground using columns on farm land. This train could be built for $6 billion with people-only pods, or $10 billion for the larger pods capable of holding people and cars. All together, his alternative would be four times as fast as California’s proposed train, at one-10th the cost.  Musk has announced that he won’t have time to pursue the project himself, but he is hoping some other inspired person or group will run with his environmentally-friendly and economized new transportation method.
