DishWash vs. HandWash

In trying to live a “green” lifestyle, what is better, to hand wash or dish wash kitchen appliances? The water conservation predicament between a shower vs. bath is easy, shower uses less water. However, measuring cleanliness and energy efficiency in the kitchen needs more measurement.

113 people from 7 different European nations were used as a part of an experiment by a University of Bonn professor to find out the answer.  The experiment results are:

  • Average handwashing used 103 litres of water and 2.5 kilowatt hours of water-heating energy.
  • Average dishwasher used 15 litres of water between 1 and 2 kilowatts hours, depending on wash cycle.
  • The dishwasher cleaned better than hand washing.

What is the optimal solution?

Use a dishwasher to wash appliances, but let them air dry out.
